The advantages of adding a turntable to a cobot/robot setup

14/06/2024

A turntable for a robot is a precision device.

A robot turntable is a precision device used in various industrial applications, such as metalworking, machining and manufacturing. This motorised or servo-driven unit enables a robot to rotate a workpiece around a fixed axis, allowing for precise positioning and controlled movement. A turntable increases the reach of the robot arm, brings the working area closer to the tool and optimises the force and precision of the operation. In addition, a turntable saves time by minimising the need for repositioning, resulting in higher productivity.

In this article, we discuss three types of electrically driven turntables: turntables without positioning capabilities, indexing tables and synchronised turntables.

Turntables without positioning capabilities

This type of turntable is often used in combination with welding robots. They are equipped with a standard electric motor and an adjustable rotational speed. Starting, stopping and speed control can be operated separately or integrated into the robot programme. These tables are easy to use and suitable for applications such as pre-grinding round shapes, polishing and removing circumferential weld seams.

Indexing tables

An indexing table has one or more fixed stop positions indicated in degrees. These tables can be driven by a stepper motor, servo motor or direct drive motor, each with their own advantages and costs. Indexing tables are ideal for applications where workpieces need to be rotated to fixed angles for the robot, or for loading and unloading the cell.

Synchronised turntables

Synchronised turntables act as an additional axis that the robot can control synchronously while performing a movement. Usually driven by a servo motor or a direct-drive motor, these tables provide the precision and power required for sanding, grinding and polishing applications. They combine the advantages of the other turntable types and are suitable for precision sanding and edge deburring, as well as for repositioning workpieces during processing. This ensures a constant feed rate of the tool against the workpiece, resulting in a uniform sanding pattern across the entire surface.

Complexity of programming robotic turntables

Controlling turntables introduces additional complexity into the programming process. Turntables without positioning capabilities are easier to implement than synchronised versions. For synchronised turntables, advanced software is required, such as the SprutCAM system, which manages the movements and coordination between the robot and the turntable.

Use Case: Cibo Robotics

Cibo Robotics uses all three types of turntables when assembling robotic cells. They often combine an indexing table with two synchronised turntables. The cell always includes a turntable positioned outside the enclosure, allowing the operator to change workpieces safely and away from dust. The synchronised turntable is controlled via SprutCAM, where all parameters are stored within the programme. This CAM programme manages the movements and coordination between the robot and the turntable.

Conclusion

Turntables play a crucial role in optimising robotic applications within metalworking. They improve accuracy, extend the reach of the cobot or robot, increase productivity and minimise operator intervention. By using the right type of turntable, companies can work more efficiently and more safely. Selecting the correct turntable for the specific application and requirements is essential for achieving the best results in industrial processes.
